Love in the Garden

Love in the Garden

My wife and I love to garden together.  You might think that because we are in the gardening business the last thing we would want to do when we are not at work would be gardening.  As a matter of fact, it is our favourite activity to do together and we do a lot (ballroom dance, cooking, golfing, yoga and travel).  So what do we like so much about gardening together?  First of all, it is great exercise.  Gardening combines yoga, Pilates, strength training and cardio into one activity.  You get to pick out what you want to do and how hard you want to do it.  You also get the benefits of meditation and being in touch with nature.  But enough about the physical benefits – I want to let you know why we love to garden together.

First of all, it is a wonderful way to spend time together.  You can work close together or a little further apart, you can share tasks or each do activities you enjoy more.  One lazy evening last summer, Maria helped me weed in the garden.  Not only did it go twice as fast but we had the satisfaction of tending to our plants and seeing how many of the “Incredible Edibles” were growing that we had planted earlier.  Later, we strolled through the garden with a glass of white wine admiring our work and basking in the satisfaction that comes with a job well done.

If you have a vegetable garden, you can have twice the pleasure by growing your own good, then preparing it together in the kitchen.

On hot summer days, Maria loves to tinker by the pool tending to our patio pots while I lounge close by.  It is a wonderful way to stay busy and do nothing at the same time.  One of her favourite pot combinations is a Black Lace Elder surrounded by white petunias which makes the pot look spectacular both day and night.

Gardening together can also make some fond memories.  One night late last May after a long day at work, Maria was determined to get the last of her pots planted.  It was after dark and raining but she did look adorable in her yellow rain coat, hat and rubber boots.

Want to go on a great outing?  How about jumping into the car and going to visit a local garden centre.  They may have a coffee shop and if not, why not pick one up along the way.  Walking through a garden centre full of plants and gift ideas is a great way to spend time together.

Happy Valentines Day
