The Perfect Antidote to the Modern World

The Perfect Antidote to the Modern World Blog

We all live in a world of high stress, where we spend most of our time maxing ourselves out between work, family and other commitments.  Gardening, however, can be seen as the perfect antidote to the modern world, a way of reclaiming some of the intangible things we've lost in our busy, dirt-free lives.

When you sit at a desk all day, there's something about literally putting your hands in the dirt, digging and actually creating something.  In addition to being a source of fresh, healthy produce, gardening can ease stress, keep you limber, and even improve your mood.

According to Andrea Faber Taylor, Ph.D., a horticulture instructor and researcher in the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, trading your BlackBerry for blackberry bushes (or haskap, raspberry or goji) is an excellent way to fight stress and attention fatigue. Taylor says, as the rhythms of the natural environment and the repetitive, soothing nature of many gardening tasks are all sources of effortless attention.

This effortless attention of gardening may even help improve depression symptoms.  Gardening gets you out in the fresh air and sunshine -- and it also gets your blood moving.  In turn, your body creates both endorphins and serotonin, which work as your body’s natural pain medication.

Gardening is hardly pumping iron or running a marathon, however, digging, planting, weeding, and other repetitive tasks that require strength or stretching are excellent forms of low-impact exercise.  This is especially important for people who find more vigorous exercise a challenge, such as those who are older, have disabilities, or suffer from chronic pain.

How good is that?  Improve the environment, grow your own food and improve your health!  All this from gardening!

Happy Healthy Gardening!

I think I’ve always been loosely involved in the horticultural industry from putting in sprinkler systems in my neighborhood as a kid to various landscaping jobs throughout university.  I’ve always been a bit of a plant nerd.  My wife and I also have two golden retrievers that we enjoy heading into the hills and running and hiking with.
