Canadian Rose Introductions

The perfect rose is captivating.  There is nothing equal to the dramatic blooms, amazing color and the rich foliage of a rose.  Roses are very easy to enjoy, but how easy are they to grow and maintain in Canada?

Traditionally roses have been a little more difficult to take care of.  Their hardiness in cold Canadian cliamtes, black spots or powdery mildew from wetter weather can sometimes be a thorn in your side.  But now there are plenty of options available with more and more introductions coming into the market place just for Canadian gardeners.

The Easy Elegance Series have been bred to naturally fight off the powdery mildew and they are as hardy as any flowering shrub, meaning you can plant them and offer minimal pruning from time to time.   With a rose that is now resistant to disease and much more hardy you won’t need to spray any chemical to ward off pests or disease.  These roses are very low maintenance.

The Canadian Artist Rose Series symbolizes the Canadian gardener and has to be adaptable to all parts of Canada.  “They must be able to survive the climate, frost lines, diseases and erratic weather patterns. That means a gardener in Prince George, BC can grow the same rose bush as the gardener in Yorkton SK, Kingston ON, Dauphin MB, or Truro NS. Their most important trait: they're reliable!".

Another incredible Canadian introduction, claimed to be the most beautiful roses in Canada are the Morden Roses.  These varieties were all developed in the world-famous rose-breeding program at the federal experimental farm in Morden.  Considered to be one of the most important groups of roses hybridized for the cold climates.

Here is a selection of beautiful roses we would like to highlight this month.
