Shrubs

Are much smaller then trees but share many of the same characteristics. Shrubs are an integral part of the landscape and can provide various colours that can be enjoyed for a lifetime if treated properly. There are thousands of different sizes and varieties available. Many shrubs are commonly known for their beautiful blooms that can be enjoyed in the garden or as cut flowers. The most commonly searched plant in the world today is a shrub; the hydrangea.

Lemony Lace is a colorful, shaggy mound of gold threads with colorful reddish new growth. The foliage is more deeply cut than 'Sutherland Gold' or Black Lace™ resulting in a compact irregular mound with extremely fine texture. White spring flowers produce red fruit in fall. Will tolerate full sun in northern climates, but prefers light shade in more southern areas. Lemony Lace looks wonderful in mixed borders or as a high-impact specimen plant. Plant it with Black Lace sambucus for a really bold statement! The red fall fruit makes it a good addition to wildlife gardens.

Tiny Wine is extra bushy, with small, refined leaves. The dark bronze-maroon foliage is colourful all season, and contrasts beautifully with the white flowers in late spring. The flower show is exceptional, with dainty flowers blooming up and down the stem in a very showy display. This durable plant may be used in the landscape for season-long colour, and is also a great choice for patio containers.

Licorice Stix™ Elder is a dramatic new Black Elder with a sturdy, columnar form, dark, burgundy-purple foliage and masses of two-tone pink blooms all summer long. New foliage emerges celery-green, for fantastic contrast. The flat-topped flower clusters, which appear solid pink from a distance, are revealed to be white at the base and deep rosy-pink to carmine at the top. In fall the flowers are replaced by black berries, beloved by birds.

Hypericums are known for their bright yellow flowers followed by colourful berries. This variety is part of the Harvest Festival series by Ball Ornementals. It produces pink ornamental berries in July. Stems with berries are great to use in flower arrangements or for fall and winter interest if left on the plant. Harvest Festival Pink is a compact growing shrub that fits anywhere from garden to patio container.

Sugar Puff™ Hydrangea is a dwarf cultivar that typically grows in a rounded mound to only 2-3' tall and to 3-4' wide. It was discovered growing in Boskoop, The Netherlands in 2003 as a naturally occurring branch mutation on Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'. It is particularly noted for its dwarf/compact shape, abundant star-shaped sterile flowers with elliptic sepals, dense nearly round flower panicles, and free blooming habit. It blooms earlier and longer than most other panicle hydrangeas. Flowers emerge white but slowly mature to a rosy pink.

Hydrangea ‘Sweet ’N Salsa’ has gorgeous bicolor red and white flowers with shades of pink. The foliage is a unique bronze-red when it first emerges. It is compact, just 2 to 3 feet high and 3 to 5 feet wide and prefers partial sun. Hydrangea bloom color depends on soil pH. Change your hydrangea blooms from pink to blue by adding aluminum to the soil and lowering its acidity (pH lower than 4.5). The large flowers are great as cut flower.

Double Hot Pink™ Hydrangea is a compact mounding shrub. It features fully double blooms on powerful stems. Depending on the pH of the soil, flowers are pink rose or blue; lower pH (below 4.5) will give blue flowers. Reblooming from summer to fall. This hydrangea is a beautiful addition to any border or on the patio in containers. The large flowers are great as cut flowers.
