Special Announcement regarding COVID-19

UPDATED APRIL 7, 2020

The Byland Family and the Team at Bylands

Dear Friends and Customers of Bylands,

We are so inspired by and grateful for the overwhelming, incredible support we have received from many of you, and our community, during this challenging time.

Many of you have reached out to offer help, food, or general support for our seasonal guest workers – thank you. Your generous offers have been communicated or provided to our workers, and this has helped with their morale and feeling of belonging in our community.

Many of you have reassured us that you are partners in our business, regardless of good and bad times – thank you. Knowing we have partners through this has been so reassuring to us as a family and as a business.

Many of you have reached out to offer encouraging words of support and compassion – thank you. Your words have moved us through some of the most difficult times we have dealt with as a company and as a team.

We are not through this yet, but we wanted to provide you with an update on our team of Canadian and guest workers, and our ongoing work to keep them well:

  • Thankfully, everyone is at home resting. We are pleased to hear that our team seems to be recovering well – symptoms are resolving, and many of the workers are reporting their readiness and willingness to come back to work when they can.
  • Our management team has shifted its priorities to distribute nutritious and culturally appropriate food to our guest workers, partnering with Sysco. We have done this in a physically distanced and safe manner. Attached are some photos of our food distribution efforts this past Thursday.
  • We continue to work closely with Interior Health to support these individuals and to ensure all of our sanitation processes, operational practices, and employee housing situations meet or exceed their recommendations. We are also working with Interior Health and the Consulate to ensure our guest workers can return to work at an appropriate time.

We are grateful for and impressed by Interior Health’s collaboration on our complex operations and look forward to being up and running as soon as it is safe to do so, to continue serving our customers and community.

Thank you all for your continued support.

UPDATED APRIL 1, 2020

Dear friends and customers,

We want to thank you all for your continued support during this time.

The health and safety of our community and our team is the most important thing to us. The affected Bylands Nurseries workers are currently resting in self isolation in their homes or in accommodations provided by Bylands.

We are doing as much as we can to continue to support our guest workers, ensuring that they have the food and supplies they need while in isolation. To do so, we have partnered with Sysco for food delivery, and are grateful for the generosity of all those who have offered to help. Our guest workers continue to be in contact with family and friends in their home countries. We continue to work closely with Interior Health to support these individuals and to and ensure all of our sanitation processes, operational practices, and employee housing situations meet or exceed their recommendations. We are also working with Interior Health and the Consulate to ensure our guest workers can return to work at an appropriate time.

A little more about our guest workers:

Bylands Nurseries Ltd has been participating in the established, government-led Seasonal Agriculture Worker Program since 2004.  This mutually beneficial program allows us to meet seasonal business demands, while providing workers with wages that allow them to support their families at home with education and medical needs. Many of our guest workers return to Bylands year-after-year – some have continued to work with us since 2004 and, over the last 15 years, have become part of the family at Bylands. We have been recognized as one of the best employers of temporary foreign workers in BC for our accommodations and internal processes.

We are grateful for the loyalty of all our employees, and we continue to offer support to those workers that have been affected by this situation. We would not be in business serving this community, and our customers across North America, without them.

Thank you all for your continued support.

UPDATED MARCH 31, 2020

To our friends and customers:

On March 27, an Interior Health Medical Health Officer (MHO) began investigating an outbreak of COVID-19 illness at Bylands Nurseries Ltd involving a group of our temporary foreign workers. We have been fully cooperative with Interior Health through this process, as the health and safety of our staff and communities is of primary importance to us. The MHO is confident that the risk of exposure to the general public is low. None of the workers were in roles that interact with customers and members of this group had very minimal contact in the community.

We have responded proactively by voluntarily closing our business until further notice. This will help us minimize the risk of spread and continue to prioritize the safety of our team, our customers and our community. The MHO has recognized that our workers live on site in good housing accommodations, which provide space for individuals to be isolated safely. We will continue to work with them to ensure all of our sanitation processes, operational practices, and worker housing accommodations are aligned with their recommendations.

Please note that this investigation does not include Bylands Garden Centre and they will be issuing a separate statement as a separate business entity.

At this time we would defer any further health or medical related inquiries to Interior Health at media@interiorhealth.com.

As a family-owned and operated business, we feel a strong connection to our community, staff, suppliers and customers we proudly serve. Thank you for your support and understanding during this very difficult time.
